**Racers**

If you are a racer looking at this site, you have realized that Maine Wheels Bicycle Club puts on two large tours aimed at non-racers. I (Brian McLaughlin) am the tour director for these events. But with 17 years experience racing in everything from World Cups to local races, I understand what you are after. Please feel free to contact me.

**Touring Cyclist**

If you are a touring / recreational cyclist, don't be concerned by my racing background. As is mentioned above, I do have a lot of racing experience. But also as mentioned above, I have had plenty of experience as a tour director. This gives me an understanding of the needs of cyclists that are not after national jerseys as well as those that are. The tours are not run with speed in mind and I have worked with riders looking to ride a tour comfortably and enjoyably.

You may want to take a look at the Preparing For Your Event - A Training Guide.

Experience

My first non-kid cycling experience consisted of riding unsupported across the U.S. in 1985. That kicked me into the world of cycling and started my racing career. In 1990 I started racing as a pro mountain biker while keeping my real job as a teacher. The two started to combine in 1995 when I started teaching race clinics. These clinics involved everything from nutrition to tactics to handling skills. From these clinics, riders started asking for help on a year round basis. After coaching for a few years I entered into the process of gaining recognized coaching licenses.
I started, and still manage, the Bath Cycle & Ski/BikeMan team. A strong New England Mountain Bike Team.
I have worked with riders ranging from Pro to recreational riders looking to ride fund raiser rides.

Philosophy

Coaching is helping a person move forward in a positive and effective way.
Every cyclist has different goals, different needs, and these get communicated differently. My coaching practice is based on listening to the rider’s goals, as well as taking into account how best to get a training plan into practice with that person.
The program is client focused (verses coach focused).

Recent success

The picture on this page is of Jon Kindig receiving his medal at the National Solo 24 Hour Championships. Jon has been one of my clients for last several years. His is a bit crazy, but we have gotten him good at what he likes to do.

Corrie - Corrie has been racing for more than a decade. Her main event has been time trails. We were able to cut between 30 seconds at the beginning of the season to 3 minutes off her best times by the end of the season. She won the state series which meant besting riders 10-20 years younger.

Lisle - When we meet he was an inconsistent expert, one race he would be in the top 7 and another he would be 25th. We worked on physical and mental parts of the season. Together we worked out a plan for the season. He did a great job of following the plan. His races became consistent and were capped off by finishing in the top 5 at nationals, top 15 at the Master Worlds and up-grading to Semi-Pro.

Carla - A master woman mountain bike racer. She has always had the raw ability to do well but has a family and other responsibilities. We worked out a schedule that would not take away from her job and family. She won almost every race she entered including a Bronze medal at the Master Worlds. Her family and coworkers very impressed with her achievements, as was I.

On other fronts I had a couple of clients that wanted to be able to ride long distances pain free. As with many cyclist they were experiencing lower back pain while riding in weekend club events. We were able to alleviate the discomfort.

Additional

I live in Maine. This sounds remote and it is, but it has amazing riding.
Much of my coaching is done by email and phone. Arrangements can be made to meet. Most people are surprised how much can get done with out ever meeting face to face. You may also be surprised how many people are coached for months before having a face to face meeting with their coach. It works.

My coaching focus is on mountain, cyclocross, road cyclist. Men and Woman. Even though I coach all ages, I focus on 20 years old and up. Master cyclist have found me helpful.
